ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST:
Barbara Lubliner
BIO
Barbara Lubliner is versatile sculptor and performance artist who has extensive experience with materials and methods. Her early figurative work is represented in the Brooklyn Museum's online feminist art base and in the collection of the Ms Foundation. Her re-purposed castoff work has been in several outdoor public installations in the tri-state area and two permanent installations; at SNAP, Queens Village and The Fortune Society Headquarters, LIC. Ms. Lubliner's studio sculpture has been in numerous exhibitions. She has had three solo shows of feminist figurative work as well as solo shows of welded metal, upcycled plastic, and most recently, reclaimed tubes at the Carter Burden Gallery in Chelsea. Her latest performance, "Ms. Muscle at Home" was part of the AT HOME performance program presented by the Radiator Arts Gallery.
In addition to actively exhibiting her work for over 25 years, Ms. Lubliner has curated exhibitions, organized, and moderated panels, and taught sculpture.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
For Women's History Month, sculptor and performance artist Barbara Lubliner will give an illustrated talk and hands-on sculpture workshop. She will share about figurative sculptors that have inspired her, giving highlights of historic, famous, as well as some little-known women sculptors. After looking at their sculptures depicting the female figure and an experiential exercise, participants will use modeling clay, or the material of their choice to create their own expressive figure. Participants will be encouraged to share their insights and discoveries. Novices, experienced sculptors, and adults of all genders and sexual orientation are heartily welcomed.
Learning outcome

Consider what underlying messages figurative sculptures are expressing.
Translate your own feelings and ideas into sculptural form.
Learn techniques to work with plastilina modeling clay.
Course outline/timeline
Day 1 Introduction, power point examples, experiential exercise, demo, in class work time, Homework
Day 2 Review, Q & A, demo, personal assessment and sharing of projects.
Class timeline – Each day will be unique in this 2-day workshop.
Assessable tasks – Develop an idea and convey it through 3-dimensional form.

Materials/supplies
1 or more pounds of Sargent Art Non-Hardening Modeling Clay in a solid color.
Note, this is a pliable easy to work with clay that does not dry out or make dust. It is not a permanent material. It is good for experimenting freely and working out ideas. You are welcome to work with other modeling clays or sculpture materials if you are experienced and equipped to work with them.

Work surface. A piece of cardboard works well.
Clay tools for shaving, modeling, and cutting. You can improvise if you do not have clay tools. Spoon, fork, knife, credit card, cuticle pusher, metal nail file, picture wire or dental floss are all useful.
Helpful to have on hand: aluminum foil, wooden skewers, and a slab of Styrofoam or insulation.
Aluminum foil and wooden skewers can be used as armatures on which to build forms. For standing figures, the wooden skewers can be inserted into the Styrofoam.
